Two Spirit People:

A contemporary term embraced by many indigenous North American GLBT people.

A term that bridges the present with the past; it recognizes the traditionally accepted GLBT roles and identities found in most North American indigenous cultures.

Self-naming is a form of empowerment and liberation. "Two-Spirit" is a transitional term that enables the exploration of pre European contact words/concepts that described GLBT people. The Lakota word "winkte" means "would be woman", a word that describes a transgender woman.
